Basgo saysUnder ₹20k: single door. Take 3 stars over 1.
Under ₹30,000 you can buy almost any single-door fridge, or a mid-size double door. What you can’t buy, we found, is a 5-star double door. Here’s what each budget gets you, which models stand out, and why the star on the listing needs a second look in 2026.
How we picked: we haven’t tested these fridges ourselves. We compared listings on Amazon India and makers’ stores in late October 2026, during the festive sales, on size, star rating and features. Prices change daily. Star ratings in listings often don’t say which BEE table they’re from; the stricter 2026–2028 table moved every band by about a star, so check the label period and the kWh per year on the label picture. Single door, under ₹25,000
| Fridge | Stars (listing) | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Haier 165 L | 1 star | about ₹12,000–12,600 |
| Whirlpool 184 L | 2 star | about ₹13,000–14,000 |
| Samsung 183 L, inverter, base drawer | 4 star | about ₹17,000–18,000 |
| LG 185 L, inverter | 4–5 star | about ₹17,000–18,500 |
| Samsung 189 L (RR21H2G25S8), inverter | 5 star | ₹17,890 on Samsung’s store |
| Samsung 215 L | 5 star | about ₹21,000–22,200 |
| Whirlpool 236 L | 5 star | about ₹23,000–23,900 |
Our pick: Samsung’s 189 litre 5-star (RR21H2G25S8) at ₹17,890. It has a Digital Inverter compressor with a 10-year compressor warranty, stabiliser-free operation from 100 to 300 V, and a 5-star rating, all for about ₹5,000 more than the cheapest 1-star. LG’s 185 litre inverter models are a close alternative.
Double door, under ₹30,000
| Fridge | Stars (listing) | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Haier 240 L | 1 star | about ₹22,200 |
| Haier 240 L | 2 star | about ₹23,000–24,200 |
| Godrej 223 L, inverter | 3 star | about ₹23,990 |
| Samsung 236 L | 2 star | about ₹24,990 |
| Whirlpool 235 L | 3 star | about ₹27,990 |
| LG 251 L, convertible | 2 star | about ₹27,990 |
| Samsung 236 L, convertible | 3 star | about ₹29,490 |
Our picks:
- Best value: the Godrej 223 litre 3-star inverter (about ₹23,990), a 3-star for barely more than a 1-star Haier.
- More space: the Whirlpool 235 litre 3-star (about ₹27,990) or Samsung 236 litre 3-star convertible (about ₹29,490).
No 5-star double door appeared under ₹30,000; 3 stars was the best on offer. Samsung’s 256 litre 3-star was about ₹32,490.
Why we’d skip the 1-star
Using BEE’s 2026 formulas, a 240 litre 1-star frost-free can use 243–281 units a year, while a 223 litre 3-star uses 183–210. That’s roughly 60–70 units a year, about ₹500 at ₹8 a unit. The 1-star Haier saves about ₹1,800 up front over the 3-star Godrej, and gives it back in under four years, then keeps costing you for the fridge’s remaining life.
What else to check
- The label period and kWh per year, not the stars in the listing title.
- Compressor warranty: 10 years is common on inverter models; check it’s on the compressor you’re buying.
- Stabiliser-free range against your area’s voltage.
- Convertible if you need extra fridge space for festivals and guests.
- Space at home, including door swing and air gaps.
Honest verdict
Under ₹20,000, buy a 5-star inverter single door, such as Samsung’s 189 litre at ₹17,890. Under ₹30,000, a 3-star frost-free double door like the Godrej 223 litre is the efficiency sweet spot, and a 5-star double door means stretching past ₹30,000. Skip 1-star fridges unless the saving is big. For what the brochure terms mean, see 2026 fridges, decoded.
Questions people ask
Which is the best single door fridge under ₹20,000?
Samsung's 189 litre 5-star single door (RR21H2G25S8), at ₹17,890 on Samsung's store in late October: an inverter compressor with a 10-year compressor warranty and stabiliser-free operation from 100 to 300 V. LG's 185 litre inverter single doors listed at a similar ₹17,000–18,500 on Amazon.
Which is the best double door fridge under ₹30,000?
A 3-star frost-free was the most efficient we found under ₹30,000: the Godrej 223 litre 3-star inverter at about ₹23,990, or for more space, a Whirlpool 235 litre (₹27,990) or Samsung 236 litre convertible (₹29,490), both 3-star. We found no 5-star double-door frost-free fridge under ₹30,000.
Is a 1-star fridge worth buying to save money?
Usually not. A 240 litre 1-star frost-free uses roughly 60–70 more units a year than a 3-star of similar size, about ₹500 a year at ₹8 a unit. A 1-star that's ₹2,000 cheaper costs you more within about four years.
Are the star ratings in fridge listings reliable?
Check which year's table the label belongs to. BEE's stricter 2026–2028 table moved every band by about one star, and many listings don't say which label a fridge carries. Look at the label picture for the period and the kWh per year.
Is now a good time to buy a fridge?
Festive sales are on, and the November–December wedding season is a peak time for appliance buying: the traders' body CAIT counted about 46 lakh weddings in late 2025. Fridge prices rose twice in 2026, so don't wait for them to fall. Buy when you need one, in a sale if you can.
